“Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson
We are all experiencing major, sudden disruption of our habits and daily routines. The impact of this level of unprecedented changes and circumstances is mind-boggling. We may be in for a marathon of sprints, as we work to the other side of this very serious health and economic crisis.
“We control most of our lives on a daily basis. We must admit it and use that knowledge assertively”, writes author Alan Weiss. If life stresses you out, give yourself permission to take control.Alan cites “one of the greatest causes of stress is the incorrect belief that we don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow and that we have little influence over it…We have far greater control over our lives and destinies, personally and professionally, than we care to admit.”
In a conversation with a different colleague, we were discussing what we thought might be the Vital Metrics for ourselves and our clients – I suggested we confirm clear health and financial buoyancy for balance of 2020. Are our long-term plans still fundamentally solid? How about for the next 90 days? Do we all have the best routines, disciplines, practices and habits in place?
Basically, generating personal power in the face of challenges, based on universal principles.
What do we need to put in place now, for the foreseeable short-term future, to be buoyant?
What will we do in the weeks ahead to plant seeds and grow our long-term prospects and skills?
Maybe best to stay present and focused on what we can control, one day and week at a time?
In talking with so many people over the last few weeks and continuously reassessing ourselves and our collective situation, I have suggestions that I will offer you, to serve your determinations.
First of all, in all probability, are you likely to be ok in the long run, let’s say after 2020? Next, do your shorter-term personal plans for at least the next 90 days, give yourself and others in your life clear, productive purpose and the most relevant direction possible?
Obviously, major transformative shifts are taking place in the short term in the larger social and economic environments. Starting with ourselves, we are working with people to reassess their needs and strategies to minimize & mitigate any impact from negative obstacles, as well as to maximize preparation for any current and future opportunities. As I have discussed with people in recent weeks, we intend to help people create doable and probable 90-day frameworks/game plans while maintaining their longer-term foundations. Additionally, we are working to help them position themselves for future growth. More to come on all of this in the days and weeks ahead.
In order to successfully achieve what we’ve never done before, we may have to become people we have never been before – necessity might be the mother of invention for a time such as this.
Some questions, for us to consider – you may have even better ones – if so, let us know.
What is needed now that wasn’t needed as much before? Courage? Patience? Persistence?
What is called for now that wasn’t called for as much before? Care? Connection? Compassion?
What is no longer needed or no longer called for? What would be better on a “not to do” list?
Knowing what you now know, what do you most need to accomplish? What are main things?
What might or could be your biggest disappointment/commitment? Are you ready? Will you be?
What are we learning? What do we need to learn? What might we need to unlearn or relearn?
By whom do you feel well understood and well served? Who can you understand & serve well?
What do you now see is possible for yourself? Your life & world? What do you most yearn for?
What’s important that wasn’t as important before? What’s no longer possible or even important?
We can all ask “What kind of world would this world be if everyone in it were just like me?”
A return to the basics – how are you keeping your mind fed and your body healthy? How are you keeping yourself energized and focused? Who are your role models? Your most supportive learning communities? What’s your plan for the balance of 2020? Next 90 days? Next 30 days?
“We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.” Author/speaker Jim Rohn
We need to prepare back up plans – Green Bay Packers Coach Vince Lombardi put it well
‘The will to win is not nearly so important as the will to prepare to win’

I often talk about Distinguishing Journalism from The Truth – you want obviously want access to the most reliable, trusted, timely, relevant sources of information.
On health, don’t get confused – get the facts. I asked our Trauma Nurse daughter, who works at the epicenter for CA – for critical medical info, she 1st recommends: cdc.gov/coronavirus
Here are some free resources that you & others may want to consider (there’s a lot of info here – I recommend you take the best and leave the rest)
“Set a routine and stick to it. Keep your body, clothes and home clean. Occupy your mind and have faith….” by Lance Morrow – March 23, 2020 11:02 am ET
“Make your bed first thing when you get up. Stand up straight. Comb your hair. Dress in clean clothes. Don’t spend the day in pajamas.
Make a daily schedule and stick to it. It should include brain work, physical work and exercise. Do half an hour of calisthenics at the same time every day, perhaps while watching the news. Keep your muscles tuned; add an aerobic routine…”
