What are ways forward?

Trust – The Critical Leadership Competency 2 minutes, 22 seconds
To all our highly valued clients and acquaintances:

Shocked about events in recent weeks? I suggest we check our vital signs.

It’s not about competition or win-lose, it’s about collaboration and win-win.

Issues about leadership, trust, culture and problem solving are top of mind.

The best definition I’ve seen of culture is from consultant, speaker, and author, Alan Weiss. Alan defines “culture” as “that set of beliefs which governs behavior.” Hence, if you want to change the culture, change the beliefs.

What if all of our individual and collective beliefs were along these lines?

A world where each and every person on the planet, no matter who and no matter where, is authentically treated with real care, dignity and respect.

Emotions are now running high – most want what will last – that which is timeless and universal – trust that we can trust – that is beyond platitudes.

How do we get access to the levers and the dials of really making everything work for everybody – bringing forth a transformation for the kind of culture in any relationship, personal or professional, at all levels of life?

What are possible paths of development going forward that will lead to a peaceful culture of continuing transformation, growth and fulfillment over time? How much focus, energy and effort will we invest to gain progress?

Trust is sacred & it looks like we are in a collective breakdown – it probably goes without saying. Why don’t we have trust and what we can do about it?

To create it, renew it and expand it? How do create it intentionally? What is tripping us up and getting in the way of trust as the core of our humanity?

If you are not already familiar with this book,

or this website, I suggest you check it out.

A while back, I presented a talk for an interfaith community on this topic.

Based Upon “Leading at the Speed of Trust”

It included topics about ways to:

  • Develop ourselves and make profound differences for those we serve.
  • Be a model and an exemplar of being an empathic, high-trust person.
  • Learn to restore real trust, resolve disagreements and empower others.
  • Optimize our contributions as we grow and serve within any community.

Without trust, we have nothing. A key leadership skill for 21st Century.

Trust takes place at many levels as an intentional, conscious endeavor.

It always starts with us, like charity beginning at home – are we creating it?

Are we willing to wrap our heads and arms around this and to fully own it?

Regardless of what we did/didn’t inherit, in terms of models and education?

Do we have sufficient principled practices, with mindsets, skills and tools?

Key is understanding and learning how to navigate turbulent waters.

“The Five Waves of Trust.” This model derives from the “ripple effect” metaphor that graphically illustrates the interdependent nature of trust and how it flows from the inside out. It defines the five levels, or contexts, in which we establish trust. It also forms the structure for understanding and making trust actionable.

THE CASE FOR TRUST Build their own case for trust.
SELF TRUST
THE PRINCIPLE OF CREDIBILITY
Increase their personal credibility.
RELATIONSHIP TRUST
THE PRINCIPLE OF BEHAVIOR
Behave in ways that inspire trust.
ORGANIZATIONAL TRUST
THE PRINCIPLE OF ALIGNMENT
Align their team, symbols, systems, and processes
with principles of high trust.
MARKET TRUST
THE PRINCIPLE OF REPUTATION
Improve their team’s reputation.
SOCIETAL TRUST
THE PRINCIPLE OF CONTRIBUTION
Make a positive contribution to their world.
Understanding these waves will enable you to see, speak and behave in ways that establish trust, allowing you to become a leader who gets results by inspiring trust in others.

Revisit the key roles of connecting, communication and collaboration:

While there is a lot of work to do and there are also no guarantees, what we do know is that, like in basketball, we miss all the shots we don’t take.

Everybody can do something to move themselves forward, onwards and upwards here – we don’t need to wait for the proverbial “big shots” to do it.

I have always liked “The Difference Between a Big Shot and a Little Shot is that a Big Shot is Just a Little Shot that Kept on Shooting.” – from Zig Ziglar

The Power of Persistence – the power to sustain – to keep on keeping on

“Widespread distrust in a society imposes a kind of tax on all forms of economic activity, a tax that high-trust societies do not have to pay.”

Francis Fukuyama, Trust: Human Nature and the Reconstitution of Social Order
